Austin at Top of Fastest-Growing Cities List

hamilton-zanze February 27, 2014

Austin was ranked first for the fourth year in a row on Forbes’s annual list of America’s Fastest-Growing Cities for 2013. The metro’s economy expanded by 5.9%, and its population grew by an estimated 2.5% last year. The tech industry has been heating up in Austin and now represents about 35% of the area’s total payroll with approximately 4,000 technology companies.

Rounding out the top 5 cities on the Forbes’s list are (in order) Raleigh, Phoenix, Dallas, and Salt Lake City. Another Texas city—Houston—also ranked in the top 10.

The Forbes study takes into account population and economic growth, including growth in gross metro product, employment rates, and median salaries for college-educated workers across the 100 most populous MSAs in the U.S.
