Kirtland AFB Accounts for 10% of New Mexico’s GDP
The Kirtland Air Force Base generates 1 out of every 14 jobs in New Mexico, with the military post contributing $7.8 billion (10% of the state’s $70.7 billion GDP) to its economy in 2012. Of the $7.8 billion, $4.3 billion (and 20,000 jobs) went to the local Albuquerque area economy.
However, $12 million in sequestration cuts will force Kirtland to furlough 2,100 civilian employees in July. These furloughs are expected to cost the local economy $8 million in lost payroll and $40 million in total economic impact.
