U.S. Rents Grow by $20.6 Billion in 2014

The average American renter paid an extra $312 this year, an increase of about 5% and an overall growth of $20.6 billion from 2013, according to a report from Zillow. The study points to increased demand as cause for the surge, reporting an estimated 1.9% growth in the total number of U.S. renters in 2014.
